Ingredients
5 large onions, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of olive oil
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 teaspoon of sugar
6 cups of beef broth
2 cups of chicken broth
1 cup of dry white wine
Salt and pepper to taste
Baguette slices
Gruyère cheese, grated
Directions
In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized and golden brown.
Sprinkle sugar over the onions and add minced garlic. Cook for another minute.
Pour in beef broth, chicken broth, and white wine. Simmer for 30 minutes to meld flavors.
Season with salt and pepper. Preheat broiler.
Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with baguette slices and Gruyère cheese.
Place bowls under the broiler until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve hot, garnished with fresh thyme or parsley.
