Old-Fashioned Family Congo Bars

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup brown sugar

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, combine melted butter and brown sugar until well blended.
Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, stirring until smooth.
Gradually mix in the flour mixture until fully incorporated.
Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts, if using.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.
Allow the Congo Bars to cool completely before cutting them into squares for serving.
