Wisconsin Apple Kringle

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup cold water

4-5 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Directions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add the cold water and mix until the dough comes together. Shape into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Arrange apple slices in the center, sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and nuts if desired.
Fold the edges of the dough over the apples to create a rustic border. Transfer to the baking sheet.
Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and apples are tender. Cool slightly before drizzling with icing and serving warm.
